Our Remedy:

The ultimate luxury in sea sponges, Nefysi premium quality natural Fina Silk sea sponges and Honeycomb sea sponges are sustainably harvested in the Mediterranean off the island of Crete.

Natural sea sponges are brimming with aquatic enzymes that inhibit the growth of mould, mildew and bacteria, making them hypo-allergenic and safe for use on the most sensitive skin, including inflamed skin conditions such as psoriasis, rosacea, and dermatitis. Natural sea sponges are self-cleaning due to the intricate systems of canals that wash out quickly and easily not retaining product causing odours and bacteria.

Our Fina Silk sea sponge is perfect for cleansing, exfoliating and massaging the skin. Their natural anti-bacterial properties and gentle exfoliating action enhances the efficacy of your natural face cleanser, leaving your skin effortlessly clean, smooth and soft. Excellent for the application and removal of cosmetics, its unrivalled softness makes it the ideal sponge for daily use on delicate skin. A sustainably, eco-friendly alternative to the synthetic sponge or face cloth.

The Honeycomb (Kapadiko) natural sea sponge (hippospongia communis) is called The King of sponges! It’s quite round with big pores, elastic and flexible. Its main trait is the large volume of foam it makes when used with our soap and its unmatched luxurious feel as a shower and bath sponge - hence its nickname the King of Sponges, because using it makes you feel like Royalty!

General Information

Our hypoallergenic, radiance-enhancing, all-natural Greek sea sponges are a zero-waste and sustainable alternative to your foam beauty blender, face washer, shower and bath washers.

Natural Sea Sponges possess remarkable powers of regeneration. Their natural reproductive cycles ensure they can re-grow lost parts and pieces broken off by water currents. They can also settle in another location and re-grow into a clone of the parent sponge.

The natural sea sponge is a renewable resource from the sea which has been harvested for over 150yrs. Wild harvest divers use specific techniques to collect the sea sponges, carefully preserving the base (roots) of the sponge. If not harvested, sea sponges have a life span of approximately 10 years, harvesting allows for re-generation and extended life.

Sea Sponge populations are harvested carefully to ensure minimal disruption to the harvest area and to assist and promote regeneration of the sea sponges for future harvest and collection. It is in our best interests to ensure the long-term sustainability of sea sponges in their natural environment, and for this reason we promote and support only sustainable harvest and collection methods.

κυκλάδες — Ancient Greece + Mythology

The Greeks have been using sea sponges both for their hygiene and for cleaning their houses since antiquity.

The use of sponges is first attested in the 8th century B.C. by the epic poet Homer. In his Iliad, the god Hephaestus cleans his face, his hands and his chest with a sponge and in the Odyssey, the servants in the palace of Odysseus clean the tables after the meals of the Suitors of Penelope with sponges.

Sponges were also used in writing, painting, medicine, pharmaceuticals, and the army, protecting the soldiers from the friction between the armour and the body, during the Roman and the Byzantine period.

There is also a reference to the sponges in the Bible, in the New Testament, when a Roman soldier offers Jesus a sponge soaked in vinegar wine at the Crucifixion. After the final end of Venetocracy in Greece (14th-16th century A.D.) the Western crusaders introduced the use of sponges in Central and Western Europe and made Venice a major sponge trading center.

Face | Fina silk sponge - Wet the sponge with lots of warm water until it is fully soft and pliable. Use alone or to remove any of our cleansers - especially removing makeup. Can also be used to remove masks.

Body + Baby | Honeycomb - Moisten sponge with warm water and then add rub onto our natural soap or add liquid soap to produce lather. Squeeze excess water from the sponge after use. For best results, allow the sponge to completely dry between uses.

Natural sea sponges hold 2 - 3 times more water than cloth or synthetic sponges without dripping, making them ideal for bathing babies without the need for a rinsing cup.

Tip: Using our sea sponges will prolong the life of our natural soap bars provided the soap is kept away from water and left to dry between uses
