Love the jar that comes with it, so pretty just to put in my bathroom, let alone being so useful in storing my shower steamers in a tight-lid container.

λακωνικός — Ancient Greece + Mythology

Laconica / λακωνικός is a name that comes from the Laconica region in Greece, better known as Sparta.

In The Book of the Bath, Françoise de Bonneville writes that in the 6th century BC in Greece, "Bathing was ritualized, becoming an art of cleansing sands, hot water, hot air in dark vaulted vapour baths, a cooling plunge, a rubdown with aromatic oils.” Our mud baths, aromatherapy, and steam are all ancient inventions!

The Greeks recognised that cleanliness was essential to health. Bathing, caring for the body and keeping it in optimal shape were all ways to pay tribute to the gods. Hippocrates recommended daily bathing and massage with fragrant oils.

Homer and other classical writers tell us of the wide variety of baths, from hot water tubs to hot air baths or Laconica.

The Spartans developed primitive vapor baths, a forerunner of our steam showers. Hot-air baths were heated by coal-burning fires or by hot rock method, heating rocks and adding water to create steam within the chamber. Bay laurel, fir, pine or juniper branches were added for their curative essences, similar to today’s aromatherapy. The Greeks also used infusions or essential oils of these plants. Sweating was enhanced by massage with infused oils or by drinking a cup of hot herb peppermint or elder flower tea before entering the vapor bath.

Ritual

Place steamer on the shower floor away from direct water or on a shelf closer to the face. Allow the heat, steam and indirect spray to release the aroma of the essential oils into the air. Breathe in deeply and enjoy!

This shower steamer is intended for single use.

DO NOT USE AS A BATH BOMB and supervise children using shower steamers in the shower as they should not be ingested or touched with little fingers.
